Croatia Airlines celebrates its 35th birthday

ZAGREB, August (Hina) – On Wednesday, Croatia Airlines conducted its first international commercial flight on the Zagreb-Frankfurt route with its new Airbus A220-300 aircraft, symbolically marking the 35th birthday of the national flag carrier, which was founded on this date in 1989.

International passengers in the new A220 aircraft took off on the same route on which Croatia Airline its debut international flight in 1992.

Exactly three and a half decades ago, on 7 August 1989, Zagreb Airlines (Zagal), an air transport company, was registered in Zagreb and started operating in December of the same year, providing postal transport services. About a year later, on 23 July 1990, Zagal changed its name to Croatia Airlines (CA), the national flag carrier for passenger, goods and mail transport.

CA conducted its first passenger flight on 5 May 1991 on the Zagreb – Split route, establishing regular passenger traffic within Croatia. The first international flight on the Zagreb-Frankfurt route occurred on 5 April 1992.

Since then the company has conducted about 709,000 flights and transported more than 45.8 million passengers. In doing so, the airline has become a member of the most important aviation associations – the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Star Alliance, a leading global airline association.

A ceremony was held at Frankfurt Airport today to mark CA’s first international flight with the new Airbus A220 aircraft.

Anniversary marking the renewal of the fleet

The anniversary of Croatia Airlines was marked with the arrival of the first new Airbus A220 at the end of July, as the beginning of the largest project in the airline’s historyВ – the renewal of its entire fleet by 2027.

The second new A220 aircraft is expected by the end of 2024, while the next six should be delivered in 2025, four in 2026, and three in 2027, and CA’s fleet will include 15 new A220 aircraft.

The project will enable further development and successful and sustainable operation. It will also confirm CA’s position as a strategically important part of the Croatian transport and tourist infrastructure.
