Constantin Brancusi celebrated in major exhibition at Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Bucharest – The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York is hosting the retrospective exhibition “Brancusi: The Artist and His Studio” from 25 October to 27 February 2027, dedicated to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Organised with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) in New York, the exhibition marks the continuation and strengthening of the partnership between the two institutions, renewed in September 2026 with a retrospective dedicated to filmmaker Andrei Ujica, the ICR Press Office said in a release sent to AGERPRES on Friday.

Presented as part of the Constantin Brancusi Year, celebrated in Romania in 2026 to mark 150 years since the artist’s birth, the exhibition brings together exceptional works from the sculptor’s famous Paris studio, preserved in the Centre Pompidou collection, alongside works from the MoMA’s prestigious collection and major loans from New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and private collections, offering the public a rare opportunity to discover his creative world and the essential role of his studio in radically transforming the language of modern sculpture.

Occupying the entire sixth floor of the MoMA, the exhibition offers a broad perspective on Brancusi’s work, starting from the profound relationship between his sculptures and the environment in which they were conceived, created and presented.

One of the exhibition’s exceptional features is the presentation in New York of sculptures rarely loaned from the Brancusi Studio, part of the Centre Pompidou collection in Paris.

“Among the emblematic works are Leda (1926), Bird in Space (1928) and Fish (1930), alongside versions of recurring themes, such as Mademoiselle Pogany and The Kiss, created in different periods and materials. These are accompanied by photographs, films, hand-carved pieces of furniture, pedestals, working tools and archival documents, which reveal the complexity of the artist’s creative process and the relationship between object, space, light and movement,” the ICR release mentioned.

The exhibition is accompanied by a volume published by The Museum of Modern Art, bringing together more than 130 photographs taken by Brancusi himself, capturing his sculptures and the transformations of his studio over four decades. Richly illustrated, the publication offers insight into how the artist built and documented his creative world, highlighting the role of photography in the development and presentation of his work.

According to the quoted source, as part of the Brancusi Year and alongside this major retrospective exhibition, the ICR in New York is organising a cultural diplomacy event attended by the exhibition’s curators, cultural figures from Romania and the US, academia, visual arts specialists, dignitaries and members of the diplomatic corps accredited in the US. The event, hosted by the MoMA on 28 October, will also be attended, with the support of the ICR in New York, by Magda Carneci, art critic and historian, essayist and writer, and Ileana Pintilie, art historian and critic, university professor, researcher and curator.
