TIRANA, June 26 /ATA/ – Conservation work has begun on the Roman Forum
at Albania’s ancient city of Butrint under a project aimed at
preserving one of the site’s most significant archaeological areas,
the Butrint Management Foundation said on Friday.

The first phase of the project, carried out in cooperation with
Ancient Rome Live, includes preparing the site, clearing vegetation
and removing accumulated organic debris ahead of conservation works.

The project, titled “Stabilisation, Protective Soil Covering and
Conservation of the Roman Forum Ruins,” is intended to ensure the
long-term preservation of the Roman Forum, a key part of the urban
centre of the ancient city of Butrint.

Located near the southern coastal town of Saranda, Butrint is
Albania’s most important archaeological site and forms part of the
Butrint National Park.

The site was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1992 in
recognition of its outstanding cultural and natural value.
