TIRANA, Feb 22 /ATA/ – Albania is advancing rapidly towards renewable energy generation in a bid to reduce dependence on weather conditions.
With climate and energy being high on the international policy agenda, Albania is also encouraging investments in the energy sector, by providing transparent framework for investment, by promoting foreign direct investment in this sector, by strengthening energy transmission systems to support domestic and regional energy trade through local and regional energy exchanges, and by promoting energy efficient practices in all sectors, including residential housing, public buildings, water supply systems and irrigation.
The Priority Policy Document for 2026-2028, published in the Official Gazette, which sets out the main pillars of the overall state policy, underlines that expansion of renewable energy capacities, the improvement of infrastructure and alignment with EU standards and policies, have positioned Albania well to achieve energy independence and sustainability.
“The country’s commitment to modernizing its energy sector will not only enhance domestic stability, but will establish Albania as a regional leader in green energy,” the document states.
In early January, Albania, Italy and UAE signed an accord to build a subsea interconnection for renewable energy across the Adriatic Sea and invest in green electricity production in Albania as part of the regional cooperation on energy. The one billion euros worth deal is designed to build a subsea interconnection for renewable energy, to strengthen existing energy infrastructure and boost renewable energy generation capacities within the Mediterranean region.
The deal will help Albania further boost its capacities as a key leader in the region, relying 100% on renewable sources for its electricity production.
Under the project, due to be finalized in the next three years, the subsea electricity line adds to existing connections between Italy and the Balkans, including a 430-kilometer subsea power link from Montenegro to Italy.
The project will allow Albania to generate green energy.
Albania led the region in terms of the renewable energy output in 2024, with solar power accounting for 6.75% of the total electricity or 430 000 megawatt/ hour, registering significant increase from only 1% or 72 500 megawatt/hour in 2023.
Some 16 solar power generation licenses were issued in 2024, with an installed capacity of 253,14 megawatt, up from 9 licenses issued in 2023.
