US strongly supports deal by Cypriots for Cypriots, says Nuland

US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland has said the US`s role is to support the strong ongoing process of the Cyprus talks and has stressed that it also strongly supports “a Cyprus deal by Cypriots for Cypriots.”

“I just had a very productive meeting with President Anastasiades, I am looking forward to going to see Mr Akinci later in the day”, she said after having been received by the Cypriot President on Tuesday morning, in a meeting which lasted approximately one and a half hours.

Nuland highlighted the fact that “the United States is really encouraged by the hard work that both leaders are doing for peace now, very encouraged by report that we have been getting from both sides of the island about the commitment now to really give the people of Cyprus the peace, the stability, the opportunity, the future that they deserve.”

“We are strong supporters of a Cyprus deal by Cypriots for Cypriots”, she said, adding that “our role is to support this strong process that is going on and that is what we are doing here today.”

She also said that “our bilateral relationship with the island is growing on the economic side, on the security side and we look forward to all the people of Cyprus benefiting from that as well.”

Cyprus was divided in 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN backed talks resumed in May between President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
