UNSG Special Envoy for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide had a meeting on Wednesday with the negotiators of the two sides, Greek Cypriot Andreas Mavroyiannis and Turkish Cypriot Ozdil Nami. Present at the meeting were the members of the technical committee on property.
Eide wrote in his twitter account that he had “a promising negotiators meeting with property experts, constructively building common ground on a crucial issue”.
Yesterday Eide had a meeting with President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci and in statements he pointed out that what is more important is to find a good solution than a hasty solution to the Cyprus problem.
The negotiators had met Eide on Monday and they might meet again within the week. Eide is expected to return to the island in the next few days as the next meeting between Anastasiades-Akinci is set for Friday, October 30th.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN backed talks resumed in May aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
