UNSG Special Adviser on Cyprus welcomes appointment of the new T/c negotiator

UNSG Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide has welcomed the appointment of Ozdil Nami as the new T/c negotiator in the UN-led peace talks for a Cyprus settlement.

Eide wrote on his personal twitter account that he welcomes Ozdil Nami as the new Turkish Cypriot negotiator, adding that he looks forward to working with him, the G/c negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis and the two leaders, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and T/c leader Mustafa Akinci.

Eide is expected to arrive in Cyprus on Monday to prepare the resumption of the talks.

Meanwhile, invited by CNA to comment Nami`s appointment, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said that the leader of the T/c community has the choice of selecting the new T/c negotiator and his selection is respected.

“We hope that through a sincere and substantive dialogue and with the contribution of Turkey, which is a necessary precondition, prospects that will allow us to be optimistic that the occupation will be terminated and our country will be reunited, will be created,” Christodoulides added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-backed talks are expected to commence soon with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.
