UN SG’s Special Adviser in Cyprus on Tuesday

UN Secretary-General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide arrives in Cyprus for a short visit on Tuesday and is scheduled to have separate meeetings, on Wednesday with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot negotiators Andreas Mavroyiannis and Erg√ľn Olgun, CNA sources have say.

According to the same sources, Eide arrives in Cyprus on Tuesday morning and is set to spend most of his visit in meetings with the UN team in Cyprus.

On Wednesday, at 11.00 hrs (09.00 GMT), he meets with Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis.

His meeting with Olgun is set for 12.30 hrs (10.30 GMT) on the same day.

On Tuesday he will host the annual UN Good Offices Mission in Cyprus reception.

Eide is expected to depart from the island on Wednesday.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied it`s northern third. Numerous rounds of UN-backed talks to reunite the island under a federal roof have failed to yield results.

Recently, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades decided to suspend his participation in settlement talks, following Turkey`s provocative acts in the island`s exclusive economic zone.

Turkish seismic exploration vessel Barbaros entered Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone in October, a few days after Turkey had issued an illegal maritime order (NAVTEX) for the area.
