Two new FMD cases detected in Nicosia district, Veterinary Services say

Two new foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) cases were detected in two new infected zones of 3 and 10 km that were created in Geri and Dali, Nicosia district, the Spokesperson of the Veterinary Services, Senior Veterinary Officer, Sotiria Georgiadou, said on Monday at a press conference in Nicosia. The total FMD cases have risen to 41.

One case was detected in a cattle farm in Geri, which has 70 cows, while the other case was detected in a sheep and goat farm in Dali, which has approximately 1,700 sheep and goats, the spokeswoman for the Veterinary Services pointed out.

Responding to a question, she explained that the new cases in Dali and Geri are due to previous movements of animals that were infected or had been infected from neighbouring premises.

At the same time, Georgiadou noted that all animals from 16 infected units have been killed. She also said that so far, more than 76% of cattle and more than 42% of sheep and goats have been vaccinated, adding that a vaccine for pigs has been ordered and is being produced, which is expected to arrive in Cyprus in March or early April.
