Tsipras-Anastasiades meeting in Davos focuses on the Cyprus issue

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades held a brief, informal meeting on the sidelines of the Davos Economic Forum and, as announced by the PM’s office in Athens, they talked about the ongoing negotiations in Cyprus, and other bilateral issues for cooperation in the broader area.

The two leaders, who are expected to meet next week at the trilateral summit between Cyprus, Greece and Israel in Nicosia, underlined their commitment to a just and viable solution in Cyprus, which will be based on previous decisions by the UN and will be in line, as they said, with Cyprus’s capacity as a member-state of the EU.

In the light of next week’s summit in Cyprus, Tsipras and Anastasiades said during their meeting today in Davos, that they will also examine the possibility of including other countries, such as Jordan, Palestine and Bulgaria in future partnerships which they believe could enhance their stabilizing and productive role in the southeast European Mediterranean basin.

UN-led peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that would reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, under a federal roof.
