United States President Donald Trump has launched a new attack on Pope Leo XIV for his opposition to the United States and Israel’s war against Iran, saying the American pontiff’s stance was putting Catholics in danger.

Last month Trump said the pope “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy” following his criticism of the war.

He took another pop during an interview on the The Hugh Hewitt Show at the weekend when asked if Leo should raise the issue of the detention of Hong Kong businessman Jimmy Lai by China.

“The Pope would rather talk about the fact that it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.

“I don’t think that’s very good.

“I think he’s endangering a lot of Catholics and a lot of people, but I guess, if it’s up to the Pope.

“He thinks it’s just fine for Iran to have a nuclear weapon”.
