Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou has said that the Cyprus tourist industry must be qualitative in order to effectively compete with other tourist destinations.
Addressing the graduation ceremony of the Cyprus Higher Hotel Institute, Emilianidou said that “tourism needs our attention and the tourist capital must be used wisely,” adding that growth is the most effective measure against unemployment.
She noted that tourism does not only highlight Cyprus` cultural heritage and civilisation, but it is also an important source of income and creates jobs.
Emilianidou said that recognizing the decisive importance of tourism in efforts to achieve economic recovery, the government has promoted various measures aiming at enhancing the hotel industry.
She noted that the Ministry implements as of 2013 a series of projects and schemes from which the unemployed, businesses and employees in the hotel, catering and tourist industry benefit.
She referred to the schemes providing incentives for the employment of unemployed people in the hotel, catering and tourist industry, as well as in vocational training schemes for people employed in hotels which fully or partially suspend their work during the winter period.
