Tennis: Simona Halep successfully struggles for US Open semifinal

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, 2nd seed, has qualified for the first time in the semifinals of the US Open, last Grand Slam tournament of the year, by defeating Belarussian Victoria Azarenka, 20th seed, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, on Wednesday, in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The match between Halep and the former world leader was interrupted by rain, in the third set, after two hours and four minutes, with Azarenka leading 2-1 and Halep serving at 40-15; the Romanian has won the first set by 6-3 and lost the second by 4-6.

Azarenka commenced with a break, but Halep had a comeback and gathered point after point and took the lead with 4-1; she eventually defended her advantage by the end of the set. More…
