The Romanian-Russian pair Sorana Cirstea/Ana Kalinskaia won the doubles title of the WTA 1,000 tennis tournament in Madrid, with total prizes of 7,854,000 euros, on Sunday, by defeating the pair Veronika Kudermetova (Russia)/Elise Mertens (Belgium) 6-7 (10/12), 6-2, 12-10 in the final.
Cirstea and Kalinskaia achieved the victory after two hours and 14 minutes of play.
In the first set, Cirstea and her partner led 4-2 and 5-3, but lost in the tiebreak (10/12), after missing four set points. The Romanian-Russian pair dominated the second set, with four games in a row, from 2-2. In the super tiebreak, Kudermetova and Mertens had 6-3, but were tied, missing a match point, at 10-9, but Cirstea and Kalinskaia won the last three points and the match.
Cirstea and Kalinskaia were rewarded with a cheque for 400,560 euros and 1,000 WTA points in doubles.
For Cirstea it was the sixth WTA doubles title (the previous one obtained in 2019) and the most important, having played five other finals.
