Tennis: Patricia Tig qualifies for 1st time to a WTA tournament quarterfinal, in Baku

Romanian tennis player Patricia Maria Tig has qualified as a first to the quarterfinals of a WTA tournament, the 226,750-dollar competition in Baku (Azerbaijan), by defeating on Thursday Ukrainian Olga Savchuk 7-5, 6-4.

Tig (21 years old, WTA No. 154), coming from qualifications, took one hour and 18 minutes to leave behind more experienced Savchuk (27 y.o, WTA No. 283, down from No. 79 in 2008).

She has debuted recently in a WTA competition, at the BRD Bucharest Open, where she halted in the round of 16; her Baku performance is a huge step towards the WTA Top 100.

Tig secured a 6,175 US dollars cheque and 78 WTA points. In the quarterfinals she will face Croatian Donna Vekic (19 y.o., WTA No. 140); they never played against each other before. More…
