First seed Irina Begu qualified on Thursday to the quarterfinals of the 426,750-dollar WTA tournament in Seoul by defeating Slovenia’s Polona Hercog 6-2, 6-7 (8), 6-2.
The 25 years old Romanian, WTA No, 29, took one hour and 20 minutes to secure a place in the quarterfinals, 8,502 dollars in prize money Begu and 60 WTA points. She failed to win in two sets, even after a comeback from 4-5 to 6-5 and from 1-3 to 6-3 in the tiebreak; she lost all the match points and had to play the third set.
Begu had also won her two previous matches against Hercog (24 y.o., WTA No. 60) — in the first round in Palermo in 2012, by 6-1, 7-6 (8), in the round of 16 this year in Washington, by 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Her opponent in the quarterfinal is Swede Johanna Larson (27 y.o., WTA No. 62). The two never played against each other. More…
