Second seed Simona Halep qualified for the first time to the US Open quarterfinals, after struggling for victory against Sabine Lisicki on Monday night.
The Romanian needed two hours and 38 minutes to win 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-2 to the 24th-seeded German on the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York, in the fourth round of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Halep needed medical assistance in the second set and had a hard time against Lisicki, the current holder of the records of fastest serve and most aces in one match.
