Romanians Marius Copil and Adrian Ungur produced the day’s surprise Thursday, defeating Florin Mergea and Rohan Bopanna in the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy doubles on the BNR Arenas of Bucharest and thus qualifying to the semifinal.

Mergea and Bopanna were favourites after the withdrawal of the seed 1 double Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer. Copil and Ungur managed a spectacular comeback from 2-5 to 5-5 in the second set, which they eventually won in the tiebreak to end 6-4, 7-6 (6). In the semifinal they will play against Britons Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray.
Copil and Ungur are the only Romanians still present in the 439,000 euros tournament. More…
