Technical University of Cluj-Napoca joins the world’s top universities at Formula Student Germany

The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN) team competed with an electric vehicle alongside some of the world’s top universities at Formula Student Germany, held on the Formula 1 circuit Hockenheimring.

‘Between August 18-25, 2025, the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN) team, ART TU Cluj-Napoca, took part in Formula Student Germany, hosted on the famous Formula 1 track, Hockenheimring. Following their podium finish at Formula Student Balkans, UTCN students continued the competition season with the most prestigious international event in the Formula Student circuit, where 83 teams from leading universities worldwide competed in the electric vehicle category,’ the university said in a release on Wednesday.

According to the same source, the UTCN team passed all mandatory technical inspections required to compete in the dynamic events and succeeded in completing the endurance race — the most demanding test, made even more difficult by the length, bumps, and tricky sections of the Hockenheimring track. Of the 83 participating teams, fewer than 70 passed the technical inspections and 40 managed to finish the endurance event.

‘I am pleased that our university’s dimension of excellence in education, research and innovation has once again been demonstrated, this time through Formula Student — an ambitious project that paves the way for our students towards successful careers in engineering. UTCN, together with its partners in the European University of Technology (EUT+), continues to support and encourage students who dedicate their free time to extracurricular activities that shape them into skilled professionals in any technical field,’ said UTCN rector, Prof. Dr. Eng. Vasile Topa, as quoted in the release.

According to the cited source, the UTCN team scored 182 points and ranked 59th overall.
