Spain supports efforts for Cyprus talks resumption, Socias tells President

President of the Spanish Parliament, Francina Armengol Socias, expressed Spain’s support for efforts to resume dialogue on the Cyprus problem on the basis of UN resolutions for a bizonal bicommunal federation to President Nikos Christodoulides, at a meeting held on Tuesday at the Presidential Palace.

President Christodoulides received Socias and the Vice President of the Spanish Senate, Javier Ignacio Maroto Aranzábal, who are in Cyprus on an official visit, at the invitation of President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou.

In a statement to CNA, the Director of the Press Office of the President, Victoras Papadopoulos, said that during the meeting the Cyprus problem, migration and developments in the region were discussed. 

According to Papadopoulos, President Christodoulides and Socias exchanged views on the issue of migration. He said that the President informed the President of the Spanish Parliament about the measures taken by the Republic of Cyprus which led to the improvement of the situation.

Papadopoulos said they also discussed developments in the region, with President Christodoulides stressing “the need for an inclusive government in Syria that respects human rights and takes into account international law.”

He also said that President Christodoulides “stressed the importance of the Union for the Mediterranean” and expressed the Republic of Cyprus’ support.

According to Papadopoulos, the President said that the Union for the Mediterranean should be taken seriously by the major EU member states, adding that given that there is now a Commissioner for Mediterranean Affairs in the Commission, there should be close cooperation with the Union for the Mediterranean.
