Sorin Cimpeanu appointed interim PM – Biography

President Klaus Iohannis announced Education Minister Sorin Cimpeanu as the interim prime minister on November 5, 2015.

Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu, Minister of Education and Scientific research, was born on April 18, 1968. He graduated from the Sf. Sava National College in Bucharest in 1986 and from the Land Reclamation and Environment Engineering College of the Bucharest University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (USAMV) in 1991. He received a PhD from the same College in 2000.

Cimpeanu worked as a design engineer at the National Institute of Research and Development for Land Reclamation (ISPIF) (1991-1992); coordinator of the Peris-Ilfov Experimental Center with the USAMV Bucharest (1992-1999); coordinating expert at the Ministry of Education and Research — National Centre for the Leonardo da Vinci European Programme (2000—2003); expert coordinator at the Ministry of Education and Research — National Agency for the partnership of universities with the economic and social environment (APART) (2003-2004).

Cimpeanu started a university teaching career in 1992, going through all the stages. He has been a professor and has been heading the PhD courses since 2006.

He was a deputy chancellor of the Land Reclamation and Environment Engineering USAMV (2004-2008). He served as chancellor of Bucharest University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (2012-2014);

Cimpeanu is also the vice chairman of the Romanian National Committee for the International Hydrology Programme (CIHR) (since 2012); corresponding member of the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania (since 2012); corresponding member of the Gheorghe Ionescu Sisesti Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (since 2012); General Secretary of National Council for Attesting Titles, Diplomas and Certificates (since 2012); and chairman of the Romanian Chancellors National Council (since July 2013).

On December 14, 2014, PM Victor Ponta nominated Sorin Cimpeanu for the position of Minister of Education and Research. He was appointed a minister in December 17, 2014 at the Cotroceni Place. More…
