Sorensen: The political situation in Kosovo has made things take longer in the dialogue
The European Union’s Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue, Peter Sorensen, has warned of delays in the dialogue due to the delays in forming new institutions in Kosovo. However, he emphasized that the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue is still alive and kicking.
Following meetings with President Vjosa Osmani and acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Sorensen stated that they discussed the implementation of the 2023 Brussels Basic Agreement and the Ohrid Annex reached between Kosovo and Serbia.
In a brief statement to the media, Sorensen said that the political situation in Kosovo would cause things to take longer in the dialogue process.
Kosovo, even six months after the parliamentary elections held on February 9, has yet to form new institutions due to a blockade in the constitution of the Assembly.
When asked about the current status of the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, the Danish diplomat said that it remains alive and kicking.
Sorensen is paying an official visit to Kosovo on Wednesday. This marks his third visit to our country. A few days ago, the European Union told KosovaPress that it is working with both parties toward the full normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations, by addressing all unresolved issues. They also added that the possibility of new trilateral meetings in Brussels depends on the willingness of the parties involved.
The importance of the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue was also highlighted by French President Emmanuel Macron last week, following a conversation with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
Macron wrote on the social platform X that France condemns any unilateral action that may harm the dialogue process.
Meanwhile, tensions between Kosovo and Serbia have recently increased due to the arrest of Serbian official Igor Popovic in Kosovo on charges of inciting ethnic hatred and division. On the other hand, Serbia arrested former police official Arbnor Spahiu in June in connection to the Serbian terrorist attack in Banjska, which also left three attackers dead.
