Soccer: Romanians optimistic about team performance at EURO 2016 (poll)

Nearly half of the aware respondents in an IRES poll see team Romania in the round of 16 of the UEFA Euro 2016 championship. IRES’s research focused on those interested in the continental soccer competition.

More than one third of these respondents are even more optimistic: 18 percent say the team will reach the quarterfinals, 10pct believe it will make it to the semifinals, 5pct — to the final, and 3pct say Romania will be champions.
As regards the Group A, where France v Romania opens the championship on Friday night, six out of ten answers place Romania second, one quarter — third, and eight percent — first.

For the opening match, 24pct expect a 1-1 result; 20pct believe Romania will win, and 37pct say France.

More than half of respondents are not sure who is the team captain; 30pct correctly named Vlad Chiriches, and 10pct wrongly mentioned Razvan Rat.

Fans’ favourite players are Nicusor Stanciu (9pct), Gabriel Torje (8pct), Vlad Chiriches (8pct); 17pct have no preference, and 24pct do not know / did not answer.

Coach Anghel Iordanescu is known to 70pct of respondents.

France has most chances to reach the final of the EURO 2016 according to 35pct of Romanian soccer fans; Germany and Spain were the next frequent answers. When it comes to winning the final, Germany are Romanians’ top choice, with France second and Spain third. In terms of sympathy, Spain take the lead, Germany come next, and France are behind it.

Nearly half of the respondents interested in the championship say they will only watch the most interesting matches; 18pct — only those of Romania; and 8pct would miss none. Most of them will watch the competition at home, and 60pct will choose PRO TV as broadcaster. More…
