Rugby World Cup: Romania defeats Canada in last-minute comeback

Romania defeated Canada 17-15 (0-8) on Tuesday night, in Pool D of the Rugby World Cup, after lagging 0-15, in “the biggest comeback” in the competition history; the World Cup repeated this statistical fact on its official website in a tweet heading “OAKSTRAORDINARY”.

The Oaks were unusually weak until halftime and saw the Canadians score another try and convert it in the second half, before kicking back. At 0-15, captain Mihai Macovei had two tries, and Florin Vlaicu converted both. With little time left, Vlaicu then brought the victory with a penalty kick.

Romania now has a shot to the third place in the pool; a victory against Italy on Sunday would bring the direct qualification to the 2019 World Cup. More…
