Romania wins World Cup women’s epee team event in Buenos Aires

Romania on Sunday won a World Cup stage in Buenos Aires of the women’s epee team competition, as it defeated Russia in the final 45-40.

Fighting for Romania were fencers Simona Pop (2-4 versus Violetta Kolbova, 0-0 versus Lyubov Shutova, 2-6 versus Tatiana Logunova), Ana-Maria Popescu, nee Branza (3-6 versus Shutova, 14-6 versus Tatiana Gudkova, 8-8 versus Kolobova), and Simona Gherman (5-2 versus Gudkova, 6-2 versus Kolobova, 5-6 versus Shutova).

In the first round, Romania, also including Loredana Dinu, defeated Brazil, 45-37; in the quarter-finals it beat the US, 45-27, while in the semi-finals it defeated Estonia, 45-36.

In the third-place meet, Estonia defeated Ukraine, 42-32.

Romania is ranked 1st in the women’s epee World Cup rankings, with 352 points. It is followed by China (348 points) and Russia (304 points).
