Remains of never-before known temple unearthed at Costesti-Cetatuie Dacian hillfort site
Bucharest, Nov 15 /Agerpres/ – The remains of a never-before known temple were unearthed at the Costesti-Cetatuie (Костешти – Четъцуиe) Dacian hillfort – Hunedoara County, in what is one of the most important archaeological discoveries at this site in the last hundred years, the archaeological precinct’s managing authority, the Hunedoara County Council, announced on Friday.
The discovery was made during this year’s archaeological excavation campaign financed by the Hunedoara County Council and the Culture Ministry, opening a new perspective on religious buildings at the Costesti-Cetatuie site. This is the fifth ancient stone alignment unearthed in the Dacian fortress in the last hundred years.
The discovery, announced in the run-up to the UNESCO World Heritage Day celebrated in Romania on November 16, will contribute for sure to a better understanding of the Dacian society and its interactions with other contemporary European civilizations, the County Council notes.
According to experts, the archaeological research will be extended in the coming years to document the planimetry of the temple, the timeline of the temple’s evolution, the construction technique, and for obtaining information about the activities carried out within its precincts.
