RAF next generation transport aircraft touches down at Akrotiri

The first of the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) next-generation transport aircraft, the A400M Atlas, touched down in Cyprus at RAF Akrotiri for the first time this week, a British Bases in Cyprus press release says.

The aircraft was visiting the RAF base as part of its ongoing checks to ensure that the base is capable of supporting this new aircraft.

The A400M Atlas can take off and land from a multitude of airfields including a short or rough airstrip.

The aircraft will be capable of carrying 32 tonnes over a range of 2,300 nautical miles at speeds comparable with pure jet airliner.

Britain, a former colonial power, has retained two military bases in Cyprus since the island gained its independence in 1960.
