President Nicos Anastasiades has called on political parties to rise to the occasion and assume their own responsibilities, noting that small time borrowers will not be saved as long as there are those who make sure that big lenders remain protected.
President Anastasiades, who was addressing an annual award ceremony by the DISY Young Graduates Association, in Nicosia, on Friday evening, recalled that when he took over the presidency “the country was on the verge of a disorderly default.”
Two years ago, he said, “no-one expected we would be able now to stand on our own two feet and look citizens in the eye.”
Our goal, he added, “was to restore the credibility of a discredited state under collapse. And we have accomplished it with many of our partners”.
President Anastasiades noted that much more can be achieved if political parties “finally rise to the occasion and assume their own responsibilities”.
Small time borrowers, he stressed, “will not be saved when there are those who would keep out of harm`s way big lenders who owe billions.”
Referring to research and innovation, he expressed the government`s intention to launch a comprehensive new strategy within 2015.
