Oprea announced after the talks that his duties of interior ministry were taken over by General Ilie Botos, a military magistrate, state secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The consultations, with advisors Dan Mihalache, Andrei Muraru and Laurentiu Stefan assisting the President, follow Wednesday’s resignation of PM Victor Ponta amid massive street protests.
“By the resignation of Victor Ponta, the whole government resigned,” asserted Oprea, who nevertheless sat next to interim Prime Minister Sorin Cimpeanu at the cabinet meeting on Thursday.
President Iohannis has scheduled meetings with representatives of the National Union for Romania’s Progress (UNPR) at 11.30am, of the Romanian Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) at 12.30pm, and of the civil society at 1.30pm on Friday; it discussed Thursday with delegates of the Social Democrat Party (PSD), National Liberal Party (PNL), Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) and of the parliamentary group of ethnic minorities, other than Hungarian.
