Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides announced today that President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades will hold a meeting on Saturday with the new Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinzi. The meeting will take place upon an initiative of the Cypriot President.
The Spokesman said that the meeting will be a social one but they will discuss about the Cyprus issue and the resumption of the Cyprus talks.
The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, has been divided by Turkish troops since the summer of 1974. Turkey still occupies 37% of Cyprus` territory, despite repeaded international and European calls to end its occupation.
UN-led peace talks are expected to resume in May, with the UNSG`s Special Advisor for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide arriving on the island next week to prepare the ground for the resumption of the talks.
