The collective advantages which derive from EU membership are far more important than any other national benefits, said the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, pointing out that European integration is an ongoing process and is constantly evolving.
Addressing an event to mark the 70th anniversary since the end of World War II, in the Polish city of Gdansk, on Thursday evening, the President said that the War has worked as a catalyst for a renewed interest in European identity, with governments of European states coming face to face with the popular demand to prevent wars and to ensure financial security.
“There is no doubt that, despite a series of challenges the EU and Europe in general continue to face, there is nothing that can nullify the achievements of European integration in the second part of the 20th century” the President noted.
The President will go to Moscow to attend commemoration ceremonies for the end of WW II. He is set to meet President Vladimir Putin.
Cyprus joined the EU in May 2004 and the Eurozone in January 2008.
