Plenković: Oil supply secure, reserves cover next three months

ZAGREB, 25 March (Hina) – Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Wednesday that Croatia’s oil supply is secure, with reserves sufficient for normal functioning over the next three months, urging citizens not to stockpile fuel.

In an interview with Croatian Radio, Plenković said supply had never been in question, just as it was not during the COVIDВ crisis and the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. He stressed Croatia is well positioned, citing its oil terminal, Rijeka refinery and LNG terminal on Krk island.

The government has shared the burden of curbing fuel prices between cuts to excise duties and reduced distributor margins to keep prices “affordable and sustainable”. Retail fuel prices remain below their 2022 peaks, the PM added.

Plenković warned against panic buying, saying there is no need for queues or excessive purchases. “Take what you need so others can too. That is the essence of social cohesion,” he said, noting the main risk is price rises rather than shortages.

He said the state must ensure normal functioning of society, the economy and transport, calling for solidarity and restraint.

On public finances, Plenković said the government still has room to act and would prioritise support in an energy shock, without cutting key spending such as pensions, wages or social benefits.

Any adjustments would focus on the timing of investments, he said, adding that available EU funds and budget reallocations provide additional flexibility.

“For now, everything is within the framework,” he said, reiterating that there is no reason for panic and that citizens should “function normally” without queuing for fuel.
