The number of tourists visiting Cyprus from the UK, Germany, France, Ireland and Israel records a significant increase, Vice President of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Kostas Koumis has said.
Koumis was speaking in the Parliament where the House Committee on Commerce discussed the challenges faced by the tourism sector in Cyprus.
The Vice President of CTO said that arrivals from the UK until the end of August rose by 16%, while tourists from Germany recorded an increase of 34%, or 70.000 in real numbers.
He added that the Irish and Israeli markets have also shown significant increase while this year the number of tourists from France is expected to be increased by 50%.
As regards the Russian tourists, he pointed out that Cyprus experienced the lowest decrease compared to all other countries, which was limited to 19%.
Koumis also referred to the Russian airline Transaero, which filed for bankruptcy. Noting that the Russian company was a very important factor for Russian tourists, he expressed the position that CTO would be able to cover the gap.
He noted that in the coming days a CTO delegation will go to Russia for a series of meetings with Russian air companies and tour operators which already cooperate with Cyprus but also with those who do not cooperate with Cyprus yet but who have expressed interest in engaging in the Cypriot market.
