Navy honours memory of heroes

Representatives of the Romanian Navy are attending an unusual military ceremony at the Cozia Monastery on Thursday, the Heroes’ Day.

According to the Navy Headquarters Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Corneliu, the seamen will honour in a religious military ceremonial Rear Armiral Horia Macellariu, buried at the monastery next to Ruling Prince Mircea the Elder.

“Rear Admiral Horia Macellariu fought in World War II as one of the commanders of the ‘Regina Maria’ [Queen Mary] destroyer; he thus earned the Order of the Crown of Romania and the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. Four students of the Mircea the Elder Naval Academy — the prestigious education institution named after the ruling prince of Wallachia ‘to the Great Sea’ — will stand as honour guard,” Pavel declared.

The Navy will also hold ceremonies to honour its heroes at the cemetery of the Cozia Monastery, where wreaths will be laid from the Navy Headquarters, the Admirals’ Club, the League of Navy Officers, the League of Navy Petty Officers and of the Romanian Naval League; at the heroes’ monuments and cemeteries in the garrisons of Constanta, Mangalia, Tulcea and Babadag.
