Milatovic: Western Balkans must remain in focus of US and EU

Podgorica, (MINA) – The Western Balkans must remain in the focus of the United States (USA) and the EU, Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic said during his visit to Washington.

According to a press release from his office, Milatovic was the keynote speaker at the inaugural Balkan Forward Summit, held in Washington and organized by the Atlantic Council.

He said that the Western Balkans must remain in focus of the international community, despite numerous global crises, emphasizing that the region is politically more complex today than it was a few years ago.

Speaking about Montenegro’s European perspective, Milatovic recalled that upon his election as president, the strategic goal was set for the country to become the 28th member of the EU by 2028.

“For me, European integration is not PR. It is an anchor, a roadmap to becoming a better society, a society in which the rule of law exists in its full sense”, emphasized Milatovic.

In that regard, he referred to the recent adoption of a large number of laws in the Parliament of Montenegro without plenary debate, warning that such a practice is not in line with European standards, the press release concluded.
