A mass grave with 40 human remains dating from the Second World War and the post-war period has been uncovered near a cemetery in the central town of Gospic, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Tomo Medved told a press conferenceВ  on Friday.

“This is a primary grave. It is well known that a lot of people were killed in and around GospiД‡, and this site, which contains a lot of traces of firearms and a large number of cartridge cases, as well as traces of ligature, only confirms that,” Medved said, recalling that over 100 mortal remains had been found at this site during the previous phase of exhumation.

During the term of this government, 81 gravesites dating from the Second World War and the post-war period have been investigated and the remains of 1,943 persons have been exhumed. Medved said that this process would continue.

Lika-Senj County Prefect Ernest Petry said that 153 human remains had been exhumed in the last two years. According to his information, these were the victims of communist crimes.
