Leaders meeting underway

A meeting between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in the framework of the Cyprus reunification process is underway, on Thursday, in the UN`s Good Office Mission premises in the buffer zone, in Nicosia.

The two leaders were welcomed by UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide and his Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Butteinheim.

President Anastasiades is accompanied by Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides, Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis and other members of the negotiating team.

The Turkish Cypriot leader is accompanied by his spokesman Baris Burcu the Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ozdil Nami and members of his negotiating team.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. This is the second meeting between President Anastasiades and Akinci after the resumption of talks which aim to reunify the island under a federal roof on May 15.
