Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will meet on Monday afternoon, in the framework of the UN-led talks, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
During their meeting, at the UN protected area, in Nicosia, Anastasiades is expected to raise an issue related to the Turkish Cypriot leader`s recent statements that a solution must provide for permanent derogations from the acquis communautaire and about a “clear Turkish Cypriot majority” of properties and population in the north part of the island
President Anastasiades said on Sunday that permanent derogations from the acquis communautaire will not be accepted in the context of a Cyprus solution. He also made it clear that each community would have separate administration in its constituent state, this, however, does not entail either population majorities or property majorities.
Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has said that the negotiations are now at a turning point and the leaders will intensify their meetings in November.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in the UN-led talks since May this year.
