Kouyialis discusses consequences of the Russian embargo with EU Agriculture Commissioner

Issues concerning Cyprus` agriculture and the consequences of the Russian embargo has discussed Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Nicos Kouyialis with the EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan, during the International Forum for Food and Agriculture organized by the German Government as part of the Green Week in Berlin.

According to an official announcement, during his meeting with the European Commissioner, Kouyialis made a brief reference to issues concerning the Cyprus agriculture at this stage with particular reference to the impact of the Russian embargo.

He also met with Latvian Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs – currently holding the Presidency of the EU Council for Agriculture and Fisheries – who briefed him on the priorities of Latvian Presidency. The current Presidency of the EU Council is expected to focus on creating a new institutional framework for organic production and the simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy for farmers in Europe.

On his part, Kouyialis asked Duklavs to exert his influence, in order to speed up implementation of the new Rural Development policy and expressed confidence for the good cooperation between the two countries on issues of common interest.

The Minister also met with his Montenegrin counterpart Petar Ivanovic.

Kouyialis is also expected to represent Cyprus at the plenary meeting of the Forum for Food and Agriculture to be held in the Chancellery of Germany, where he will discuss the transition to a new global bioeconomy.
