Justice Ministry wants jails out of cities

The Ministry of Justice plans to move the penitentiaries out of cities, Minister Robert Cazanciuc said in Oradea (northwestern Romania) on Thursday. He claims it would allow more efficient re-education activities.

The National Administration of Penitentiaries must submit by June a national investment programme for the prisons, as the Justice Ministry will launch two major projects this year, Cazanciuc announced in a press conference.

He mentioned that social re-integration stands no chance, despite any re-education efforts in the current facilities. More space is necessary, and possibly the support of non-governmental organizations working in the correction facilities, as practiced in many European countries. More…
