Juncker expresses hope to Galanos for resumption of talks

President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker, in a letter to Mayor of Famagusta and President of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities Alexis Galanos, has expressed hope for a speedy resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue.

According to a press release, a delegation from the Famagusta Municipality, led by Galanos, recently visited Brussels and, during meetings with European Commission officers, raised the issue of the return of the fenced-off town of Famagusta to its legitimate owners, as provided for by UN Security Council and European Parliament resolutions.

Asked by Galanos what he could do for Famagusta, Juncker says he has good knowledge of the issue and the fact that it has been discussed by the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus in the context of confidence-building measures, without any result so far.

The press release says Juncker reiterates his support to efforts for a solution of the Cyprus problem, as expressed in the joint statement of the leaders of the two communities in February 2014, including reaching an agreement on a package of confidence-building measures, which could facilitate the creation of momentum for a solution.
