The strategic partnership with the US, NATO and EU membership remain the fundamental pillars Romania’s foreign policy is built upon, President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday.
“The strategic partnership with the US, NATO and EU membership have been, are and will be the fundamental pillars Romania’s foreign policy is built upon,” the head of state said at the meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Romania.
He brought to mind that he wants Romania to be not only a beneficiary, but also provider of security in the region and strengthen its profile and consolidate its role inside NATO and the European Union.
He head of the state pointed out that the organization in Bucharest of the meeting of the leaders of the eastern flank states, the meetings with the counterparts from EU members and also from the neighboring area, as well as the agreement on raising the Defence budget to 2 percent of the GDP until 2017 are the expression of this goal.
“By adopting the National Defence Strategy in June 2015, Romania has clearly and predictably shaped up the framework in which it operates in terms of national security, but mostly it defined itself as a state in reference to its own citizens, to the allies and its international partners, in the region and in international politics overall. ‘Romania, powerful in Europe and in the world’, as we called the National Defence Strategy, isn’t a desideratum concerning only us, back home, but a foreign policy commitment in itself. Romania is strong in its determination to be a source of stability and democracy in a complicated region, in the consistency and predictability of its actions in report with the foreign partners and in its loyalty to values and principles,” Iohannis added.
