House President warns over Downer ‘convergences’ document

House of Representatives President Yiannakis Omirou has warned that the National Council has already decided a document prepared by former UN Secretary General`s Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer on convergences achieved during UN-led peace talks does not correspond to reality.

In statements he made Omirou said that the document was discussed at National Council level and “it was judged not to correspond to reality.”

Former President Demetris Christofias had prepared a document which corrected in most points the so-called convergences Downer claimed had been achieved, he added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. A new round of UN-backed talks to reunite the island under a federal roof is set to commence soon.
