House President says Athens Polytechnic uprising is beacon for our own struggle

The Athens Polytechnic uprising of 1973 when Greek students rose against the military junta, then ruling Greece constitutes a beacon for our own struggle and a starting point of our new visions, House of Representatives President Yiannakis Omirou has said.

In a written statement marking the 42nd anniversary since the Polytechnic uprising on November 17, 1973, Omirou notes that the anniversary does not constitute a mere service in memory of those who perished but rather a beacon guiding our struggle and a starting point for our new visions.

The House President points out that “our debt to our own struggle is not to adapt with the (Turkish) occupation, not to bow down to the so called realistic logic and to insist on the imperishable values of freedom and justice.”

For a solution of the Cyprus problem, he adds, “which will ensure the unity of the space, the people, the state, the institutions and the economy without armies and anachronistic guarantees and keeping human rights and basic freedoms protected for all The Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.”

Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN backed talks resumed in May aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
