The election of Mustrafa Akinci as the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community is a positive development, House President Yiannakis Omirou has said, noting that it also sends a message to Turkey for a change in its policy on the Cyprus problem.
According to an announcement, issued by the House President, Mustafa`s life creates hope for a different approach of the Turkish Cypriot community to the Cyprus problem. However, he added, the main and decisive factor in the Cyprus problem is Turkey.
“Now it is time for the international and European community to press Turkey in order to change its stance and abandon its intransigence, to accept a solution that will put an end to the occupation and will lead to a united and democratic state, based on the principles of international and European law”, he concluded.
Akinci won a runoff election on Sunday with just over 60.5% of the vote, against incumbent Dervis Eroglu who got 39.5%.
UN-led peace talks are expected to resume in May, with the top UN Cyprus envoy arriving on the island next week to prepare the ground for the resumption of the talks.
