Greece’s term as an elected member of the UN Security Council starts on Thursday

The official ceremony for the new non-permanent members in the United Nations’ Security Council will take place on Thursday, at 19:00 Athens time.

The Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, together with his counterparts from Denmark, Somalia, Pakistan and Panama, will participate in the ceremony, which includes the placing of the flags of the five new countries joining the Security Council next to the flags of the existing members consisting of the five Permanent Members (China, Russia, USA, France, UK) and five Non-Permanent Members (Slovenia, Algeria, South Korea, Guyana, Sierra Leone) whose term ends in 2025.

Greece’s participation in the UN Security Council as a Non-Permanent Member gives Greece the opportunity to showcase its diplomatic capital by actively participating in the formulation of decisions on global issues, such as peace, development, security in unstable regions and human rights.

In an environment of multiple global challenges, conflicts and international instability, the top priorities of Greece’s participation in the Security Council include the peaceful resolution of disputes, respect for International Law, climate change and security, women, peace and security, the protection of children in armed conflicts and maritime security.

Athens’ commitment to these priorities is demonstrated by Greece’s solidarity in the Ukrainian struggle to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as our country’s active policy in the Middle East, in order to limit the humanitarian crisis. Greece will support these priorities through a series of actions and initiatives, which will include the major and critical countries of the planet.
