Gerapetritis: The European Union must stand with solidarity in the face of every violation of international law

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis stressed that “the European Union must stand with solidarity in the face of every violation of international law,” in a statement as he arrived for the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland on Wednesday. Gerapetritis noted that he would brief his counterparts on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean.

As the minister pointed out, the informal meeting will address issues “that are pressing and concern the global security architecture, the Middle East, and those cases where revisionism is particularly acute.”

“Greece always stands on the side of the party defending itself, on the side of international law, in favour of freedom of navigation and human dignity,” he said.
“In addition, we will have the opportunity to discuss issues relating to the European Union’s external action. How the European Union, while maintaining its strategic autonomy, will increase its geopolitical and diplomatic footprint in the world, so that it can make a meaningful contribution to resolving major disputes and to the peaceful coexistence of peoples,” he stressed.

Finally, he added, “I will have the opportunity to brief the foreign ministers of the EU member states on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean, on all issues relating to violations of an international nature.”

“The EU must stand in solidarity in the face of every violation of international law,” he stressed. “Greece always stands by international rules and unwaveringly supports multilateralism. At the same time, there can be no concessions when it comes to the rules of international legality,” he noted.
