Limassol District Court ordered on Thursday that Michalis Spyrou, the 56 year old former member of the Referee Committee of the Cyprus Football Organisation, be remanded in custody for four days in connection with match fixing allegations.
The referee Marios Panayi claimed that officials in the Cyprus Football Association and officials from the Association of Referees are involved in match fixing.
The Cyprus Police are investigating offences in connection with instigating persons to commit a crime, corruption of civil servants, abuse of authority, deceit, abuse of trust by a civil servant, neglect of duty and transactions that indicates corruption.
According to the police, there is a written complaint that the suspect in the period between 2010-2011 when he was a member of the Referee Committee of the Cyprus Football Organisation, in 4 different cases he tried to convince a referee to influence the results of football games in favour of specific teams, in exchange for the referee`s advancement and a positive assessment.
The suspect initially refused to answer any questions. However, today he raised in a written statement some claims, which are investigated.
