A Financial Times report highlights Greece as the southern gateway to Europe for liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, emphasizing its crucial role during the transitional period leading up to the full ban on Russian natural gas.

Specifically, the article noted that Greece is positioned as Europe’s southern gateway for LNG imports, mainly from the United States, as the EU prepares for a complete ban on Russian gas by 2027. Athens is banking on Greece’s geographic location, combined with LNG capacity expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and close ties with Washington, to secure a central role in the European gas market once the ban takes effect.

On his part, Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou had stated that we will no longer fund the aggressor adding that more efforts are needed for the gradual phase-out of Russian fossil fuels.

It is further highlighted that since assuming office in 2025, Papastavrou has promoted closer ties with the United States, presenting energy as a bridge in transatlantic relations amid heightened tensions between Washington and Brussels.
