The films “La drum cu tata” (That Trip We Took with Dad) by Anca Miruna Lazarescu and “Aniversarea” (The Anniversary) by Dan Chisu will be screened at the Marche du Film, an event dedicated to specialists as part of the Cannes Film Festival, May 11-22.
Projected at the Marche du Film will be eight Romanian films: “Varza, cartofi si alti demoni” (Cabbage, Potatoes, and Other Demons), a documentary directed by Serban Georgescu; “Dublu” (Double), directed by Catrinel Danaiata; “Anniversary,” directed by Dan Chisu; “That Trip We Took with Dad,” directed by Anca Miruna Lazarescu; “Dincolo de calea ferata” (Beyond the Railroad), directed by Catalin Mitulescu; “Box,” directed by Florin Serban; “Lumea e a mea” (The World is Mine), directed by Nicolae Constantin Tanase, and “Minte-ma frumos în Centrul Vechi” (Lie to me Nicely Downtown), directed by Iura Luncasu.
The Romanian stand at Marche du Film is organised by the National Filmmaking Centre, together with the Ministry of Culture, aimed primarily at promoting Romanian filmmaking internationally. The stand will provide updates on the Romanian film industry and will connect the Romanian filmmakers with the international film industry, foreign institutes, organisations, as well as production and distribution companies.
Romania will be promoted as a partner that can provide production through film studios and production teams in the country.
Cristian Mungiu’s “Bacalaureat” (Graduation) and Cristi Puiu’s “Sieranevada” (Sierra-Nevada) have been selected to run in the official competition against Pedro Almodovar, Jim Jarmusch, the Dardenne brothers and Xavier Dolan. The film “Caini” (Dogs) by Bogdan Mirica is selected for the Un Certain Regard section. “4:15 p.m. sfarsitul lumii” (04:15 PM, the End of the World) by Catalin Rotaru and Gabi Virginia Sarga will compete in the official short film section, while “Toate fluviile curg in mare” (All Rivers Flows into Seas) by Alexandru Badea, will compete in the Cinefondation section.
Two Romanian co-productions will also run in this year’s edition of the Cannes Film Festival, the feature competition: “Toni Erdmann,” a Germany-Austria-Romania co-production (Romanian co-producer Ada Solomon) and “Album” (Turkey-France-Romania, Romanian co-producers Calin Peter Netzer and Oana Iancu) in the Semaine de la Critique.
Romanian Radu Muntean is a jury member at the Cinefondation section and the short film section of the Cannes Film Festival.
Anamaria Antoci’s “Ilegitim” (Illegitimate) has been selected for the Producers on the Move programme, May 14-17. In its 17th edition, the programme aims to improve professionalism of producers; selected for this year are 20 specialists from the European film industry.
Director Anca Damian will participate in Talents Cannes Adami, a programme designed to discover young actors aged between 18 and 30 years. Romanian Anca Damian directed “Carre,” one of five short films related to comics or animations, starring young actors.
“One of the main objectives of the Ministry of Culture and the National Centre of Romanian Filmmaking at Cannes this year is signing an agreement with France’s Centre national du cinema et d l’image animee (CNN), for a policy of close cooperation in film,” says the Romanian Ministry of Culture. This new convention will provide for detailed expertise granted by France for the organisation and operation of Romania’s National Filmmaking Centre, especially in relation with European and international organisations, as well as for the development of projects designed to sustain filmmaking education and improvement of dysfunctional operations in the system for funding and promoting the Romanian national film industry.
